Breaking Strongholds

Strongholds are patterns that keep us stuck—but God’s desire is freedom. This page explains what the Bible means by “strongholds,” how they show up today, and why prayer and fasting matter.

What Are Strongholds?

In the Bible, a stronghold isn’t a building or a fortress.
It’s anything that has taken a strong grip on our thinking, behavior, or identity—and keeps us from living free.

Strongholds often start as thoughts, habits, or wounds that get reinforced over time until they feel normal, unchangeable, or “just the way I am.”

Scripture says:

“The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.”
— 2 Corinthians 10:4–5 (KJV)

What Do Strongholds Look Like Today?

Strongholds don’t always look dramatic or obvious. They often show up quietly as:

  • Lies we believe (about God, ourselves, or others)
  • Patterns we feel stuck in (fear, anger, addiction, shame, unforgiveness)
  • Mindsets shaped by past pain (“I’ll never change,” “God won’t help me,” “This is just who I am”)

Over time, these things shape how we think, react, and live—often without us realizing it.

Why Are We Praying for Strongholds to Be Broken?

Because Jesus didn’t just come to forgive us—He came to free us.

“He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives…”
— Luke 4:18 (KJV)

During this fast, we’re intentionally praying for:

  • Personal freedom — where each of us may be stuck, bound, or weary
  • Generational freedom — patterns that have followed families for years
  • Corporate freedom — anything limiting us as a church from fully walking in God’s purpose

Why Fasting and Prayer?

Fasting helps us quiet the noise, refocus our hearts, and create space for God to work deeply—not just on the surface, but at the root.

This isn’t about willpower or trying harder.
It’s about inviting God to do what only He can do.

“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”
— 2 Corinthians 3:17 (KJV)
