Fasting is a biblical practice that helps God’s people refocus spiritually. When we fast, we temporarily lay aside certain comforts or habits in order to give greater attention to prayer, Scripture and obedience.
Throughout the Bible, fasting is connected to:
Jesus Himself assumed that His followers would fast — not as a religious performance, but as a sincere act of devotion.
“This kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” — Matthew 17:21
As we fast together, we are believing God for:
One of the most encouraging aspects of this fast is that we are not walking through it by ourselves.
Our sister church, Zion Hill in Houston, Texas, is joining us for this entire 28-day fast, including daily prayer calls.
Though we are in different cities, we are united in purpose — standing together in faith, prayer, and expectation as the Body of Christ.
“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity.” — Psalm 133:1
Fasting is not about earning God’s favor. It’s about positioning ourselves to hear Him more clearly.
In Scripture, fasting is often paired with prayer. When we temporarily set aside something that normally takes our time and attention, we redirect that focus toward God—through prayer, Scripture, and obedience.
Scripture: Matthew 6:16–18 (KJV)
Throughout the Bible, God’s people fasted in moments when they needed wisdom, strength, direction, or breakthrough. One of the key themes you’ll hear throughout our 28-day fast as a church is “release from strongholds”. Learn more about breaking strongholds. It’s a Biblical term for something that has a “strong hold” on us and keeps us from living the free and abundant life that we’re promised as a follower of Christ.
Here are a few examples:
Scripture: Matthew 4:4 (KJV)
