Break Free of Strongholds

The walls we build don’t have to become the prison we live in.

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to remember what hurt you?

Somebody says one careless sentence, and you can replay it years later word for word. Someone betrays your trust, and long after they have forgotten about it, you are still carrying the weight of it.

Can I tell you something?

That is exactly how the enemy works.

He does not always need a dramatic event to derail your life. Sometimes all he needs is one painful moment that you never surrender to God. If he can convince you to rehearse that offense over and over again, he can begin building something in your heart that God never intended you to live behind.

The Bible calls it a stronghold.

And here is the good news I came to share with you:

Strongholds do fall.

No matter how long you have carried the hurt, how thick the walls have become, or how impossible freedom feels, Jesus Christ is still in the business of setting captives free.

The Greatest Battle Is Within You

When most people think about spiritual warfare, they imagine what is happening around them.

The Apostle Paul points us somewhere different. He points us inward.

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.”

2 Corinthians 10:4, KJV

Paul does not begin with governments, circumstances, or the people who make our lives difficult. He begins with strongholds.

The greatest battlefield you will ever face is the warfare happening behind your eyes and between your ears.

That is where victories are won. That is where defeats begin. That is where lies compete with the truth of God.

A stronghold is a fortified way of thinking that has set itself up against what God says is true. It begins with a thought. Then another. Then another.

Before long, that thought becomes a belief. The belief becomes a mindset. The mindset begins making decisions for you—and you may not even realize it has happened.

Strongholds Are Built One Stone at a Time

Nobody builds a prison overnight.

Strongholds are built brick by brick and stone by stone.

One disappointment.

One betrayal.

One harsh word.

One unanswered prayer.

One broken promise.

One painful memory.

One stone.

Then another.

Then another.

Eventually, you have built a wall so high that you cannot see the freedom God has been offering you all along.

The enemy loves it when we keep adding stones. He whispers:

“They will never change.”

“You will never trust again.”

“You had better protect yourself.”

“Do not let anybody get close.”

Every time we agree with the lie instead of God’s truth, another stone is added to the wall.

Esau Shows Us How Strongholds Begin

The story of Jacob and Esau is not simply a story about two brothers. It shows us what can happen when hurt goes untreated.

Jacob deceived his father, Isaac, and stole the blessing that belonged to Esau.

Esau was devastated.

The Bible tells us that Esau hated Jacob and determined in his heart that one day he would kill him.

Now, do not miss what happened next.

Nothing.

Not the next day.

Not the next month.

Not even the next year.

Twenty years passed.

Twenty years of carrying the offense. Twenty years of replaying the betrayal. Twenty years of feeding bitterness.

Can you imagine making mortgage payments on anger for twenty years?

That is what some people are doing today. They are making payments on a hurt that happened years ago. They are paying interest on an offense that Jesus has already offered to carry.

The person who wounded them may have moved on. Life has kept moving. But their heart is still standing in Genesis 27.

That is what a stronghold does.

It convinces you that yesterday deserves permanent residence in your tomorrow.

The Most Dangerous Conversations

Can I tell you where some of the most dangerous conversations in your life take place?

Not at work.

Not at home.

Not even at church.

They take place inside your own head.

You keep rehearsing what they said. You imagine what you should have said. You replay the argument. You rewrite the ending.

Day after day. Week after week. Year after year.

Eventually, you are no longer talking to them. You are talking to yourself.

When you rehearse the offense long enough, the offense starts rehearsing you.

It begins shaping how you see people, how you trust, how you love, how you worship, how you pray, and how you respond when somebody reminds you—even unintentionally—of the person who hurt you.

The prison is not made of bars.

It is made of thoughts.

Hurt Was Never Meant to Become Your Home

Please hear my heart.

I am not saying your pain was not real.

Some of you have been deeply wounded. Some have experienced betrayal within their own families. Some have been hurt by friends they trusted. Some have been wounded in church. Some have prayed prayers that seemed to go unanswered.

Those hurts are real.

God does not ask us to pretend they never happened.

But He does ask us not to build a house there.

Pain may visit your life, but bitterness does not have to move in.

Disappointment may knock on your door, but unforgiveness does not have to become your roommate.

Some of us have become so comfortable living inside our hurt that we cannot imagine life outside of it anymore.

But Jesus did not die so you could survive behind emotional walls.

He died so you could live free.

Walls Feel Safe Until You Realize You Are Locked Inside

Here is the deception: strongholds almost always disguise themselves as protection.

“I will never let anybody hurt me again.”

“I will never trust another church.”

“I will never get close to anyone.”

“I will never forgive them.”

Those statements may feel strong. They may even sound wise.

But when they keep you from experiencing God’s healing, they are no longer protecting you.

They are imprisoning you.

The walls you built to keep pain out eventually keep joy out. They keep peace out. They keep healthy relationships out.

Sometimes they even keep God at a distance because you have convinced yourself that your pain is safer than His healing.

That is exactly where the enemy wants you: comfortable inside a prison you helped build.

But can I encourage you today?

Just because you built the wall does not mean God cannot tear it down.

He specializes in doing what seems impossible.

Strongholds Do Not Stay Small

Strongholds never remain contained. They never affect only one area of your life.

What begins in your mind eventually shows up in your marriage, your family, your workplace, your church, and even your relationship with God.

A person who has been betrayed begins expecting betrayal everywhere.

Someone who has been rejected starts assuming rejection before anybody has a chance to accept them.

Someone who was wounded by a church may begin looking at every congregation through the lens of yesterday’s pain instead of today’s opportunity.

That is what strongholds do.

They do not simply influence your thinking. They begin interpreting your entire world.

Before long, you are no longer responding to what is happening today. You are reacting to what happened years ago.

That is not freedom.

That is bondage.

The Stronghold Starts Talking Back

The longer a stronghold remains, the louder its voice becomes.

It starts finishing your sentences. It starts making your decisions. It convinces you that you are simply being realistic.

“People do not change.”

“I have tried forgiveness before.”

“This is just who I am.”

“Nobody can be trusted.”

Those are not the words of faith.

Those are the echoes of a prison.

Can I remind you of something?

God never intended your past to become your identity.

What happened to you is not who you are. What somebody else did does not get the final word over your life.

Jesus does.

God’s Truth Is Greater Than Your Experience

Sometimes we believe our experience more than we believe God’s Word.

Our experience says, “You will always carry this.”

“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”

John 8:36, KJV

Our experience says, “Nothing will ever change.”

“With God all things are possible.”

Matthew 19:26, KJV

Our experience says, “Protect yourself at all costs.”

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

Proverbs 3:5, KJV

Faith does not deny what happened.

Faith simply refuses to believe that what happened has more authority than what God has spoken.

Every lie you have believed must bow before the truth of God’s Word.

Every stronghold must come down.

God May Already Be Working

After twenty years apart, Jacob finally returned home.

Can you imagine what was going through his mind?

He remembered Esau’s anger. He remembered the threats. He remembered the deception.

He expected revenge.

He prepared for the worst.

He divided his family. He sent gifts ahead. He made plans to protect himself.

But when the moment finally came, Esau did not reach for a weapon.

He reached for his brother.

He ran to him, embraced him, and wept with him.

What Jacob had feared for twenty years did not happen.

I wonder how many of us have spent years building walls against something God has already begun healing.

While Jacob was preparing for war, God had been working on Esau’s heart.

Do not miss that.

God can be working where you cannot see Him. He can soften hearts you cannot soften, open doors you cannot open, and do things behind the scenes while you are still preparing for yesterday’s battle.

Your Freedom Does Not Depend on Their Apology

Not every relationship will end the way Jacob and Esau’s did.

Not every apology will come. Not every family will be reconciled. Not every friendship will be restored.

Some people will never acknowledge the pain they caused. Some may never ask for forgiveness. Some may never change.

Your freedom does not depend on their repentance. Your freedom depends on your Savior.

Forgiveness is not pretending the offense never happened. It is refusing to allow the offense to continue controlling your life.

When you forgive, you are not saying what happened was acceptable.

You are saying that Jesus is greater than what happened.

You are placing justice back into the hands of the only Judge who never gets it wrong.

Jesus Breaks What We Cannot

Here is why the Gospel is such good news:

Jesus did not come only to forgive sinners.

He came to set captives free.

He came for people trapped behind walls of fear, addiction, bitterness, shame, regret, and unforgiveness.

He came for people living behind walls built one stone at a time.

At the cross, Jesus carried every sin, every burden, every wound, and every chain. He stepped into our prison so He could lead us out of it.

The enemy wants you to believe your stronghold is permanent.

The cross declares otherwise.

The enemy says your story is over.

“Behold, I make all things new.”

Revelation 21:5, KJV

The enemy reminds you of your past.

Jesus reminds you of His grace.

The enemy builds prisons.

Jesus opens prison doors.

It Is Time to Put Down the Stones

Can I ask you something?

What stone are you still carrying?

Maybe it is resentment. Maybe it is disappointment. Maybe it is grief. Maybe it is church hurt.

Maybe it is something somebody said about you years ago.

Maybe it is something nobody else even knows about.

You have carried it so long that it feels like part of who you are.

It is not.

Lay it down.

You do not have to keep making mortgage payments on your pain.

You do not have to keep rehearsing the offense.

You do not have to keep living behind walls that Jesus already died to tear down.

Strongholds do not fall because we are strong enough.

They fall because God is mighty enough.

The same God who rolled away the stone from an empty tomb is still rolling away stones today.

He still heals broken hearts. He still renews minds. He still restores families. He still gives peace that surpasses understanding.

He still sets captives free.

Break Free of Strongholds Today

Today can be the day the walls begin to fall.

Not because you have figured everything out.

Not because the people who hurt you suddenly made everything right.

But because Jesus Christ is enough.

He is enough to heal what people broke. He is enough to restore what sin destroyed. He is enough to bring hope into the places where bitterness once lived.

The greatest battle you will ever fight is the one behind your eyes and between your ears.

But take heart: you do not fight that battle alone.

The weapons God has given you are mighty through Him for the pulling down of strongholds.

So stop rehearsing the offense.

Stop agreeing with the lie.

Stop carrying stones that Jesus is asking you to surrender.

Walk out of the prison.

Leave the walls behind.

Live in the freedom Christ purchased for you.

The walls you built do not have to become the place where you spend the rest of your life.
