It Was Caused By Pressure

Part of our year-long series: Fixing What’s Broken to Build Back Better

Scripture: Luke 13:10–17 (KJV)

Picture it with me: a woman walks into the synagogue—but she’s not walking like you and I walk. For eighteen long years she has been bent double, eyes fixed on the ground, unable to stand up straight Luke 13:11 . Every step, every breath, every day—a crushing weight presses her down.

Some of us woke up this morning the same way. Your back might be straight, but your spirit is bent by pressure—finances, relationships, health battles, old wounds, spiritual warfare. Something inside is crying, “There’s got to be more than this bent-over life.”

The same Jesus who straightened her back is present to straighten your life.

Life’s Pressure Gets Weighty

Luke says she “could in no wise lift up herself” Luke 13:11 . That’s what pressure does. Financial strain bends us with worry. Broken relationships fold us with heartache. Sickness bows us with fear. Guilt and shame keep our gaze glued to the ground.

The enemy loves to pile pressure on pressure until we forget what it feels like to stand tall in God’s presence. Eyes down, heart heavy, hope thin—we shuffle through life looking at the problem instead of the Provider.

Pressure bends us toward the ground; grace lifts us to look up again.

But Jesus Sees Your Struggle

“And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him…” Luke 13:12 . In a crowded synagogue, Jesus noticed the bent-over woman—and He notices you. He sees the bill you can’t pay, the marriage you can’t mend, the habit you can’t break, the sadness you can’t shake. He does not shame you; He calls you forward.

If you’re still seeking, not sure about Jesus—He sees you, too. Not with condemnation, but with compassion. He’s inviting you out of the shadows and into His healing presence.

Jesus doesn’t call you out to embarrass you—He calls you forward to restore you.

His Touch Changes Everything

“And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God” Luke 13:13 . One touch. What pressure bent for eighteen years, grace lifted in a moment. Your situation may not vanish overnight, but something fundamental shifts when Jesus lays His hand on your life—despair gives way to hope, fear to faith, defeat to victory.

That pressure that brought you here might be the very thing God uses to bring you to Him. When He touches your story, the burden becomes the birthplace of praise.

When Jesus touches what pressure twisted, worship rises where worry used to live.

It’s Time to Straighten Up

Church, the same Savior is in the house today. He still calls, still touches, still makes straight. If life has you bent over, hear Him calling your name. Don’t spend another day shuffling with eyes to the ground—come to Him and let Him lift your head.

And if you don’t yet know Jesus as Lord and Savior, the heaviest pressure you carry is the weight of sin. The good news? He died to lift it, rose to free you, and is calling you now—not to condemn, but to save. The altar is open. Don’t leave bowed when you can leave blessed. Don’t leave bent when you can leave believing.

Friends, let’s stand up straight in His presence and give Him the glory He deserves.
